Best known for his unconventional portraits of celebrities, photographer Chris Buck searched for the subject of his newest book, in his words, “in the place where strength and vulnerability coexist.” The result is Buck’s most surprising and compelling work: Gentlemen’s Club: Partners of Exotic Dancers.
Through forty photo sittings and interviews, and with the foreword by author and former dancer Lily Burana, Gentlemen’s Club examines this untold aspect of the human connection, laying bare the conflict and complexities of this intense life.
Buck’s striking images and insightful interviews capture these relationships in unvarnished terms, juxtaposing the reality of everyday life and the fantasy world dancers occupy when working.
“By turns raffish, gallant, sly and touchingly vulnerable, this is a wonderful band of gentlemen--even if some of them aren't, strictly speaking, men--and this book is a reminder of basic humanity in a seemingly inhuman time.”
- Mary Gaitskill, author of “This Is Pleasure”
“Chris Buck’s pictures give us strange attractors, weaknesses in human psychic energy fields, blocked emotions, yearnings for radicality, the normalcy of sexual fantasies, need, the romance of desire, and efflorescent tattered love.”
- Jerry Saltz, Pulitzer Prize-winning art critic, New York Magazine
“Chris Buck has taken a widely photographed subject—the world of strip clubs and dancers—and made it wholly his own. Buck’s interviews with dancers’ partners are incisive and powerful, but it is his accompanying photographs that reveal this world in all of its gorgeous complexity: darkness and levity, uncertainty and hope, bravado and vulnerability. Gentlemen's Club is a treasure and instant classic.”
- Karen Abbott, New York Times bestselling author of The Ghosts of Eden Park
“Every Chris Buck photo is a mystery, a pervading, off-putting idea, always conceptual, often visceral, and sometimes unfathomable. I love penetrating words that make you think, and I adore startling images that are invasive.”
- George Lois, legendary art director
